Do Trees Freeze?

As outdoor  temperatures dip below zero,  ever wondered do trees freeze?

The answer is yes and no.

But how and why?

In the link below Michael Snyder, forester and Commissioner of Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, shares the science on how trees survive winter cold: and why some tree cells freeze and some cells don't.

Click on the link for the dynamics of how trees prepare in the fall and survive winter cold...

Smithsonian Chestnuts

I took my dad, who maintains the Boyd American Chestnut nursery in Pennsylvania, to help winterize the Smithsonian Museum's nursery near Front Royal, Virginia.  Other members of the team from the Virginia Chapter of TACF recorded individual tree data.

The Smithsonian interns got practice driving in four-wheel drive on side slopes.

Training Young Trees

Structural pruning on young trees will prevent a lot of the storm damage in mature trees.  Now University of California has a great on line video for home use.

Training Young Trees is simplified for home gardeners, but horticulture educators and green industry professionals can also benefit from this resource. The 18-minute video and its shorter chapters are available free at their YouTube Channel:  http://tinyurl.com/trainingyoungtrees.

    Yellow recycling bins

Arlington replaced its yellow recycling bins with larger blue bins and a more convenient, all-in-one container program. County officials invited residents to use the yellow bins however they choose.

If you no longer have a use for your yellow bin, please contact Jim Egenrieder (jim@deepwater.org) of the Trees-in-Schools project to pick up your bin, or simply drop it at 1615 N. Cleveland St. in the Lyon Village neighborhood in the Clarendon/Courthouse area of Arlington.
